Experimental Crops

Our new land is heavily wooded and the soil is acidic. We are able to successfully grow most of our established crops, however, there are new opportunities for different fruits and vegetables. So far, we are experimenting with blueberries, wineberries, and jostaberries. We’ve also planted a few nut trees and figs, to see how they perform. Mushrooms and forest botanicals should grow well here, so we’ve joined the Northeast Forest Farmers Coalition to experiment with a variety of native woodland species and have started growing oyster, lions mane, and shiitake mushrooms. We are decidedly all over the place, and that is how we’ll learn how to grow with the land we have.
